First time in 15 years of selling Real Estate
Friday, August 14th, 2009I had a leaking oil tank!! I had thought that the whole leaking underground oil tank scare was a thing of the past. With most oil tanks having been brought in to basements years ago, who even has an underground tank? Isn’t it rare that they are actually leaking? Well, I guess not…
And now I’ve learned a few things.
Most importantly if you do have an underground tank, and want to sell your house you can’t. With the tightening of mortgage lending restrictions no bank will lend if there is an underground oil tank– period. They don’t care about insurance, etc. The tank must be brought inside.
My advice? If you have an underground tank bring it inside ASAP! The longer you wait the more likely it will leak, the more it will leak, and the more expensive the clean-up…and it get’s really expensive. We all eventually sell our houses, some after lots of thought and planning, and others pretty quickly due to unexpected life changes . Why have the added stress of removing and testing a tank on top of an already stressful event?
